›Planetary Protection Short Course
The course will provide an introductory yet comprehensive review of all applicable policies, practices and procedures necessary to implement a successful planetary protection program, while emphasizing the integration of managerial, administrative, and laboratory aspects of planetary protection.
In particular, attendees of the course will learn about the framework of coordinating and implementing planetary protection programs for personnel with diverse skills and responsibilities, including an introduction to extremophiles; treaties, regulations and government policies; laboratory techniques and practices; guidelines for hardware design and facilities; compliance and data analysis methods; and lessons learned from previous missions. The course will also provide an introductory hands-on laboratory experience in microbial contamination, sampling and data management, and clean room procedures.
The Planetary Protection Short Course is organized specifically for IPPW-7, in close collaboration with the Planetary Protection Officers at NASA and ESA, and taught by experts in the field with years of practical experience in all aspects of planetary protection.
