In this presentation, I will first remind the challenges of modern cosmology and the most recent measurements that constrain the cosmological world model. I will then explain how the eBOSS project is born and what are the goals and challenges in making this survey a success. eBOSS will also be a data mine for astrophysical research, and will allow us to prepare the next generation cosmological surveys.
