The World Extreme Medicine Conference provides a platform for inspiring medical minds to meet. Here, we challenge thinking, build bridges and introduce new ideas about medicine at its most remote and austere. The conference brings together four related medical fields in one arena: Pre-Hospital, Disaster & Humanitarian, Expedition, and Extreme Medicine, with experts in each field presenting the latest thinking and techniques, and sharing their inspiring stories.

Now in its eighth year, the World Extreme Medical Conference (#WEM19) is returning to Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh, from 23-25 November 2019.

#WEM19 is an exciting platform for medical minds to share experiences, innovations, best practise, promote cross-disciplinary working and generate new research.

Over three days, the World Extreme Medicine ‘Thriving in Adversity’ Conference will serve as a springboard for inspiring approaches and new thinking to medical practices. The event attracts over 900 professionals, bringing together the world’s most respected names in extreme medicine alongside delegates from over 30 countries. These individuals represent a diverse array of backgrounds including special forces medics, expeditioners, extreme athletes, war surgeons, humanitarians, medical researchers, emergency first responders and organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

The unique energy created by gathering these bright, inquisitive and hungry minds together in one place is unparalleled. The networking, career and educational opportunities are limitless.

The conference focuses on a number of interrelated medical fields: Pre-Hospital, Disaster & Humanitarian, Expedition, Endurance and Extreme Sport, Space and Extreme Medicine. We work with a range of multi-disciplinary partners and together, we offer a programme of fascinating talks from world-renowned experts in their field – from Arctic explorers to vascular surgeons, remote medics to NASA & ESA personnel. We host practical plenaries and hands-on workshops that explore field-proven techniques and provide you with medical ‘hacks’ to inspire and enhance your skills. These sessions are designed to help you to become a more effective practitioner of remote medicine and allow you to truly take medicine to the ‘extreme’.
