Training course
Greece
Thessaloniki

On the occasion of this year’s International Conference on Air Quality 2020 (9 - 13 March in Thessaloniki, Greece) RUS Copernicus will provide a half day hands-on training session where participants will access from their own laptop a Virtual Machine to exploit the open source toolboxes available in the RUS environment to download and process Sentinel-5P data.

Please note that the RUS Copernicus Virtual Machines used for this training course can only be provided to citizens/residents of the Copernicus programme member countries (EU plus Iceland and Norway).

Background

Sentinel-5P was launched in October 2017. Its main purpose is to screen the Earth’s atmosphere and quantify different pollutants (CO, NOx, aerosols…) with a great accuracy and spatial resolution. It also provides measurement continuity with precedent and ongoing atmospheric spatial missions (OMI, IASI and SCHIAMACHY). The data recorded by this satellite are free of use and present a great interest to globally monitor air quality, greenhouse gases emissions and detect and assess the impact of polluting events.

This half day training will focus on the processing of Sentinel-5P data for different types of trace gas and aerosol in the atmosphere. The specifically designed BEAT Open Toolbox will be used throughout the workshop. You will learn to monitor both daily pollution and polluting events based on processed Sentinel-5P data.

You will get familiar with the structure of Sentinel-5P products and will gain knowledge on how to create world maps of the pollution caused by a particular type of trace gas from Sentinel-5P data. You will also learn how to monitor and follow polluting events (such as rainforest fires, pipeline emissions) thanks to the daily measurement and global coverage of Sentinel-5P, plus how to quantify the pollution in a city during distinct parts of the year.
