Online, from Ireland

Sat 11 Apr @ 8.00pm BST (Dublin time)

As our Curious Constellations event in March's Fly Me To The Moon programme had to be cancelled, Dr. Niamh Shaw now kindly invites you into her home for an informal online talk exploring the night sky via Facebook Live. Part of The Ark @ Home.

A scientist and theatre-maker, Niamh will share some of her favourite celestial objects and constellations in the night sky, along with a few inspiring stories about her efforts to make it into space, in this lively online talk for families.

Niamh will also talk about her time as part of Crew 173 in a simulated Mars mission at the Mars Desert Research Station in southern Utah, and how her experience there compares with our own current experience of isolation.

Once the talk has finished, if you're not feeling too sleepy, we hope you'll be inspired to go outside and take a look at the night sky for yourself.

About Dr. Niamh Shaw

Dr. Niamh Shaw is passionate about igniting people’s curiosity. She presents the human story of science, creating theatre shows, public events and contributions to media with this focus. She has set herself a life’s mission to get to space, as both an artist and explorer. In that capacity, she has participated in simulated Mars missions, a zero gravity flight, witnessed launches and landings of astronauts to the International Space Station. She has appeared on RTÉ's 'The Late Late Show’ & 'The Tommy Tiernan Show' to speak about the story so far and her need to engage with our planet.

Niamh is the 2018 co-recipient of 'Outstanding Contribution to STEM Communications', awarded annually by Science Foundation Ireland, and she collaborates with research and science institutions, arts & media centres, private corporations and NGOs to attract new audiences of all ages to science and space. She has acted as a keynote speaker on science and space topics across the world and, on international Women’s Day 2019, spoke at Áras an Uachtaráin in response to President Higgins's speech celebrating Women in the Sciences. Niamh was artist in residence at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory from 2014-2019, writes for BBC's Sky at Night Magazine, and her first book 'Dream Big - An Irishwoman's Space Odyssey' from Mercier Press, will be on bookshelves from March 2020.
