Do the UK need BMD systems, and if so what, where and when?

NATO states that proliferation of ballistic missiles poses an increasing threat to Allied populations, territory and deployed forces. Over 30 countries have, or are acquiring, ballistic missile technology that could eventually be used to carry not just conventional warheads, but also weapons of mass destruction. Defence against such systems is a complex issue demanding a multilayer approach which could include; space based early warning, ground and sea based warning systems high and low layer interceptors all connected within a command and control system.

How would the UK contribute to a BMD system, and what purpose would it have?

The Royal Aeronautical Society is planning a conference on the subject of Ballistic Missile Defence. Further details will follow shortly.
