Research in space on the International Space Station, and on Earth with space analogues, is essential to accelerate scientific discoveries, technological innovation, and space exploration. This Topical Day will focus on animal models used to study and improve crew health in space and human health on Earth. In space, it is well known that the extreme environment composed of microgravity, chronic stress and ionizing radiation causes health problems for crew members. Interestingly, some of these changes mimic the onset and progression of disease and/or ageing on Earth.

The purpose of this Topical Day is threefold: (1) to give a review of animal models used to study space-related health problems, (2) to discuss future strategies for sustaining and improving space animal model research in Europe, and (3) to develop new collaborations in this field.

In this context we have invited renowned speakers which are active in this research field to give overview presentations. Discussion sessions are included to stimulate the exchange of ideas.

  • Review recent experimental details, scientific findings, and “lessons-learned” from the different animal models used in space research
  • Identify scientific activities in Europe to promote animal studies in the field of space research to enable space exploration and benefit human health on Earth
  • Identify opportunities to share tissues, maximize science return, and develop collaborations that maximize animal model research scientific return to the community
Target Audience
The target audience of this Topical Day consists of students (bachelor, master, PhD), researchers and professionals from industry and agencies with a high interest in animal models and/or space research and who wish to have an overview on the different animal models used in space research as well as want to discuss the (future) challenges.
