SWF is happy to support this one-day symposium being co-organized by the Ocean Policy Research Institute, Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), and Space Policy Research Center, Japan Space Forum (JSF).

It is significantly important for maritime-faring countries to secure their maritime activities and safety in collaboration with other countries. Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing is a global risk for such maritime faring countries and should be addressed by international cooperation. Satellite-based ship monitoring can cover a wide area at a glance so using space technologies for global ship monitoring is increasingly of interest.

Through discussions among operational organizations of fishery ship monitoring in Asia-Pacific region, as well as user organizations and space technology providers in Japan and the United States, this symposium hopes to provide perspectives for future maritime monitoring by using cost efficient and effective space technologies.
