›Baikonur Cosmodrome - A Virtual Journey
23 April 2020 - 17:30 BST (18:30 CEDT, 12.30pm EDT)
Join space specialist, Remco Timmermans at the Space Store (well, virtually) on Thursday 23rd April 2020 at 5:30pm, for a voyage through the most historic, yet most unknown place in space history...
The launch of Sputnik in 1957 shook the world and started the space race. The launch of Laika, Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova won the Soviets several historic firsts in space flight. The launch site and the people behind these epic milestones remained shrouded in mystery for decades. That secret place was Baikonur Cosmodrome, located in a remote location in modern-day Kazakhstan. Fast forwarding to 2020 Baikonur is still the only location in the world from where astronauts launch to the International Space Station. These astronauts, now from all over the world, follow in the footsteps of the heroes of the beginning of the space race. Many traditions born with the launch of Yuri Gagarin still exist today. In his talk, space specialist Remco Timmermans will take you on a virtual journey to the most historic, yet most unknown place in space history. Are you ready to fly to space?
Remco Timmermans is a freelance social media specialist for space. He has degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business, and attended the Space Studies Program at the International Space University.
