Online, from UK

Time: 30 April 2020 15:00-16:00 BST/16:00-17:00 CET

Before the lockdown, from the moment you woke up, to the moment you arrived at your desk, you interacted with around 25 individual satellites in Space. This ranges from the spacecraft that your device uses to navigate you from A to B, and the communications satellites that deliver you the News, to the timing signals that control the national grid, and space borne sensors that keep an eye on our roads and railways.

It’s little surprise then that the use of satellite data is a £12bn business in the UK!

In the North West, ESA Business Applications are enabling a sports photography company to upload their products to their online store quickly, regardless of their location, and a medical technology business develop a product that allows the elderly to enjoy independent, safe lives. Across Europe, we’ve assisted companies working in retail, education, logistics, agriculture, transport, tourism, aviation… you name it!

The UK Government has the goal of growing our nation’s Space economy to 10% of the global market, or £40bn, by 2030. More than half of that will come from businesses like yours combining their existing expertise in their sectors, with the wealth of possibilities offered by assets in Space, to create innovative new services and access new markets.

The Creative, Digital and Tech sector group invites you to hear from Alan Cross, ESA Business Applications Regional Ambassador, who is tasked with exploring how engaging with existing space assets and collaboration between businesses can deliver growth and create jobs across the region’s economy.

A co-founder and former Chair of the Northern Space Consortium CIC, which aims to nurture the north west of England and north Wales space industries, Alan is a skilled and engaging communicator with a lifelong passion for astronautics and astronomy. He has more than a decade of experience in managing and delivering client focused solutions, including several years engaging businesses and stakeholders within the space industry.

In his role as ESA Business Applications Regional Ambassador, Alan is hosted by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at their Daresbury site in Halton.

Part of the European Space Agency, ESA Business Applications helps companies to integrate space data and technology, such as satellite communications, navigation, and imagery, into commercial services in a range of sectors. We enable data from satellites to transform businesses on Earth by offering zero equity funding, technical expertise, and business support, having have already invested €200m in launching innovative services in over 500 businesses. ESA Business Applications is particularly interested in supporting applications of space technology to previously untapped consumer markets.
