“Alcohol in Space” is the first book on this topic and examines the history of alcohol in space, as well as dozens of companies and projects that are exploring the possibilities of alcohol production in space.

In his talk to the British Interplanetary Society, Carberry will highlight many of the companies that are leading the world in the development of space alcohol including whiskey producers Ardbeg and Suntory have also sent experiments to ISS, analyzing how whisky ages in microgravity. In addition, American beer giant, Budweiser, which has sent barley experiments to the International Space Station (ISS). “The production and consumption of alcohol has played a significant role in human society since the dawn of civilization,” stated author Chris Carberry. “Will this still hold true when humanity is exploring and settling the outer reaches of space?”

Carberry will also highlight the long history of alcohol in human society, how alcohol has been addressed in science fiction, and space agriculture technologies.

“Alcohol in Space” is based on extensive research and interviews with some of the most prominent individuals in the space industry as well as the alcohol industry.

About the speaker

Chris Carberry is CEO and Co-Founder of Explore Mars, Inc, and helped to turn that organisation into one of the most influential space nonprofits in the world. Previous to his role with Explore Mars, Carberry served as Executive Director of The Mars Society as well the Archivist of Modern Political Collections and Operations Manager at the Massachusetts Historical Society. Carberry has been quoted in numerous national (US) and international news stories, has published hundreds of opinion pieces, and has testified before both the United States Senate and House of Representatives.  Carberry is the author of the recently published book, “Alcohol in Space”.
